Mascara is a cosmetic product used to darken, thicken and lengthen the eyelashes to create a variety of effects. Fluttery, bold, defined or feather-light, there’s a mascara for every occasion. Mascara is typically a combination of pigments, oils and waxes and is most commonly found in a liquid formulation. Did you know Maybelline was behind the first ever ‘automatic mascara’ named Ultra Lash which was the first to come in a tube with a grooved brush? We’ve always been ahead of the curve when it comes to mascara!

Tubing mascara’s inventive formula coats each lash with a water-resistant, fibrous sleeve that won’t budge no matter how hard you sweat or rub your eyes.  It won’t come off with your usual eye-makeup remover either – all you need is to gently massage your lashes with water and you’ll little tiny, black tubes slipping off your lashes and down the drain. What are you looking to get out of your mascara? It may help to first consider the different overarching mascara types: lengthening, curling and volumizing. Next, consider how well you need the formula to last, and whether you typically have issues with mascara imprinting on your eyelids or flaking throughout the day. Lastly, take a look at a few different brush styles and consider what would work for you. Once you have a basic idea of some of your mascara non-negotiables, you’ll be equipped to find the best one for you – check out our easy Mascara Quiz for tailored mascara tips. You absolutely can! A lash lift will give you curl and bounce that lasts up to eight weeks, but your lashes will still be your natural colour. To add some colour to your lifted lashes, opt for a water-based mascara and wait 24 hours after processing apply any eye makeup. A waterproof mascara is not the way to go if you’re looking to preserve your lash lift as long as possible – oil-based makeup removers, an essential when dealing with a waterproof mascara – will deteriorate your lash lift more quickly. As effective as mascara can be, there is a particularly dramatic look that can be achieved with the help of a false lash strip that might be just what you have in mind for a special occasion. To fashion a seamless blend between your natural lash and falsies, prime your lashes with a coat of mascara – before false lashes. Most of us aren’t blessed with naturally thick, jet black lashes that will blend nicely with the bold look of a pair of false lashes, but this workaround will have you looking flawless. If you’re asking ‘can you put mascara on eyelash extensions’, the answer is yes – but with some caveats. If you’ve recently had classic eyelash extensions applied, then firstly: wow, your lashes look fantastic. To preserve your lash extensions, you should use a water-based formula which will remove easily. However, if you’ve had a volume or hybrid eyelash extension you should avoid applying mascara altogether, as it will ruin the fan effect and could cause your extensions to stick together. If you’re wondering how to stop mascara from smudging, here’s our advice. During your skincare preparation stages, moisturise the eye area with something light that isn’t going to create an oily base. Once you’ve concealed to your heart’s content, place a light dusting of translucent powder over your lids to keep excess oil at bay. To top it all off, add a slick of your favourite waterproof mascara. Waterproof mascaras are formulated to stay in place throughout the wear and tear of your day and protect your lashes against the elements, so you can rest easy knowing your mascara look is intact.  No – if you’re removing mascara gently, it won’t damage your eyelashes. It’s safe to wear mascara every day as the product itself doesn’t cause any harm to your eyelashes. However, if you’re rough with your lashes during the removal process this can cause some lashes to come loose or break. Our advice? Use a for-purpose eye makeup remover to tackle your mascara, and be generous with product application – a dry cotton pad will tug on and weaken your lashes. Soak a cotton round in eye makeup remover and press to your eyes, massaging lightly as needed. A lash primer is an additional, optional step you can implement before mascara. Usually found in a white formula so you can see where you’ve applied the product, a lash primer can help thicken and lengthen the lashes before a coat of mascara, and potentially increase the wear time of your mascara. Some lash primer formulas contain nourishing ingredients to condition your eyelashes and prevent breakage. An eyelash curler can kick your mascara game up a notch – especially if your natural lashes are on the straighter side. Makeup artists agree that you should curl your eyelashes before applying mascara, or you’ll risk mascara sticking to the curling tool and pulling on your lashes. To use your curler, begin with clean, dry lashes, line up the curler to your lash line and lightly pulse for five to ten seconds. Then move the curler to the tips of your lashes and pule a second time – this ensures an even curl.
